Dartfish make for interesting little aquarium subjects and they are quite popular among fish collectors. They have long graceful bodies and many species sport beautiful colors. Found near coral reefs mainly in the Indo-Pacific region, Dartfish feed on plankton and other tiny invertebrates.

Many of them live in burrows in the sand and quickly retreat into them at the first sign of danger. Most species of Dartfish grow to only 2 to 4 inches or so.

Dartfish are peaceful in temperament and should be not be kept with any aggressive fishes. Their tank should be decorated with plenty of rocks and caves for them to hide in. They should also be provided with a sandy substrate 2-3 inches deep for burrowing.

Dartfish possess an uncanny jumping ability so a secure tank cover is a must. Their diet should consist of a variety of high quality protein foods such as brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, bloodworms, etc. Dartfish should be kept in groups of 2 or more but each fish needs enough space to establish his own territory.

Breeding Dartfish is difficult. There are some reports of Firefish being bred in captivity but not much is known about the subject.
